The Remembrance Rockery. 1914 - 2014
The idea of the Remembrance Rockery was to create a space around the main rockery for the planting of poppies. Gravel and a plastic membrane had to be removed and the gravel was used to build up the existing rockery. Having removed this and dug over the earth we now had to find enough poppies to make this into a substantial memorial fitting for all who had fought and died a century ago.

Eventually the poppies grew, and whilst walking through the Gardens early in the morning just before the beginning of August the Bumblebees were everywhere. They were busy foraging and the sound of their humm was delightful. Not only had we created a space for them but we had created a special memorial where people could remember and be silent, with their own thoughts and memories.
Nature can give us so much when we look after it and we had previously sown some wild flower seeds along a ridge beside the path. As the poppies grew so did the Cornflowers. people walking through the gardens were thrilled, many had not seen Cornflowers for many years. Added to this was the fact that the Cornflower was the Remembrance flower of France, so too this area became a place of Commemoration. Soon we will sow the new Cornflower seeds and the Poppy seeds together around the rockery to flower again, these will be joined by the tiny white Alpine Forget-Me-Not which is the German flower of Remembrance.
All growing in peace together.
