THE CASTLE or GUN PLATFORM
There is little information about the Gun Platform in the Bolitho Gardens. It appears in a water-colour of c1800 but whether the 'castle' which stands there now is original or not is questionable. However, it is an important area for the tiny wild flowers which creep and thrive among the small gaps and crevices among the granite stones.
Here you may find Scarlet Pimpernel, Blue Pimpernel, Herb Robert, Saxifrage and whilst one gazes in wonder at the huge non native species in the Gardens such as the over grown Cannas which prove invasive to other smaller plants, it is worth conserving the few smaller but equally important wild flowers. The Group therefore do not treat these as weeds and there is no use for weedkiller here. Instead we are hoping to provide a habitat here for smaller wild flowers and encourage insects to thrive.
Around the Gun Platform we sowed some Love in a Mist and this flowered during Summer. A swath of delicate pale blue and white, along with a few odd marigolds and some Foxglove which should be ready to flower next year.
